Sady Doyle is a damn wonderful writer, and manages to convey many thoughts and feelings I have, half articulated and half formed and floating around in my brain, about lady business. This quote in particular struck me as quite the explanation as to re: the trials and troubles I encounter (more often than I’d like!) by being a lady:
It works the way patriarchy always works: We tell girls to do certain things (care about dating; care about motherhood; Be In Touch With Their Feelings), and then when they do them (care about dating enough to write about their dates; care about motherhood enough to start a mommy blog; Be so In Touch With Their Feelings that they consider those Feelings important enough to consider at length and then share with the world at large) we tell them that those activities are worthless and stupid and a waste of our time.

“The last man on earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock on the door.” - Frederic Brown
The two sentences are in conflict. The author knows this but presents them to you with no explanation, leaving you, the viewer to reconcile them. You can believe or disbelieve the first sentence, the second, or both. Through your shared curiosity, the man in the room becomes instantly relatable, and the person on the other side of the door is instantly fascinating. Even though you know nothing about them. That knock could be anything: a rescue mission, a lost love, a hallucination, a monster… The entire scene is off the page and is now solely in your mind. This is Lost.

Another plus for Utena? Rewatchability. You see the entire series in an entirely different light after the end.
(And oh god, watching the opening story of Utena and her prince after seeing what really happened to Utena that day, what she really saw- heartbreaking. Because of course her story was rewritten, changed, misremembered, twisted to be about the prince instead of about her.)
